On 29 October 1863 Ensign Palmer was part of a detachment from the 68th Regiment. This detachment embarked from Godwin's wharf, Ragoon on the steamer "Armenian" for Auckland, New Zealand.[9]
He arrived in New Zealand with his regiment in 1864 and departed 1866. He served in the New Zealand Wars and was awarded the New Zealand Medal. [10]
Aged 23 he was wounded in the action at Taranga on 21 June 1864 receiving a slight gunshot wound to the neck.[11][12][13]
