Biography

William Henry France Palmer was born about 1841.^{[1] [2]}

He enlisted in the British Army in 1859 and served in the 68th Regiment of Foot. ^[3]

He held the following ranks:

• Ensign, 68th Regiment, by purchase 30 December 1859^[4]
• Lieutenant, 68th Regiment, by purchase 26 May 1865^[5]
• Lieutenant, 14th Hussars, by exchange 15 February 1868^[6]
• Captain, 14th Hussars, by purchase. 28 May 1870.^[7]
• Retires from the 14th Hussars on 28 June 1871.^[8]

On 29 October 1863 Ensign Palmer was part of a detachment from the 68th Regiment. This detachment embarked from Godwin's wharf, Ragoon on the steamer "Armenian" for Auckland, New Zealand.^[9]

He arrived in New Zealand with his regiment in 1864 and departed 1866. He served in the New Zealand Wars and was awarded the New Zealand Medal. ^[10]

Aged 23 he was wounded in the action at Taranga on 21 June 1864 receiving a slight gunshot wound to the neck.^[11][12][13]
