John Alexander Paterson was born on the 16th of March, 1903, in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, the son of John Paterson and Ann Elizabeth McLeish.^[1]

At 2, on the 13th of June, 1905, his brother David Louis Paterson was born.^{[citation needed]}

At 3, in 1907, his brother Thomas Henry was born.^{[citation needed]}

At 9, in 1913, his mother Ann Elizabeth McLeish died, in Gore, Southland, New Zealand.^{[citation needed]}

At 29, on the 17th of October, 1932, he married Catherine Josephine (Kathleen) Angland, in Wanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand.^[2]
