In 1841, John Paterson was living with his parents Henry and Jane, and siblings at Shore, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland.[3]
Although his parents had moved to Eyemouth in 1833-34, all of their children after Prideaux, including John, up until the 1843 birth of their son George, were born at Eyemouth and baptised at Tweedmouth, England.
In 1851, 13 year old John was with his parents and siblings in Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland.[4]
John Paterson and Jane Crombie were 'Irregularly'[5] married in 1855 at Lamberton Toll, Berwickshire, Scotland.[6] Their daughters' birth registrations, Elizabeth on 27 December 1860 and Isabella on 13 June 1866, have their parents marriage date as 26 September 1855 at Lamberton Toll, whereas their son, William Patterson's birth registration on 20 April 1868 lists their marriage date as 22 September 1855 at Lamberton Toll.
Children from this marriage were:
Unknown Paterson (1856-1856), a son, was born on 12 July 1856 in Milnes Row, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland and died there two hours later.[7]
Henry Paterson (1857-1881) was born on 22 June 1857 in Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland.[8] Henry drowned at sea on 14 October 1881 aboard the Margaret & Catherine the same day as his father. His sister Isabella Paterson was Informant to both deaths.[9]
Isabella (Paterson) Renton (1866-1926) was born on 13 June 1866 in Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland.[16] Fifteen year old Isabella was informant to her father and brother's death registration in 1881.
At the birth of their first child in 1856 the family were living at Milnes Row, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland. In 1860 when Elizabeth was born they were at Goodman's Property, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland.
John was a fisherman
In 1861 John, Jane and their two children Henry (age 3) and Elizabeth (age 3 months) were in Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland, with John's occupation Fisherman.[23]
In 1871 John, Jane and family were living in New Row, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland.[24]
In 1881, John, Jane and family were living in Commerce St Long Entry, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland.[25]
John Paterson and his son Henry drowned during the "Great Storm" of 14 October 1881, a day that became known as "Black Friday" or "Disaster Day". One hundred and twenty-nine fishermen, one in three of the adult male population of Eyemouth, (and seventy others from neighbouring villages), drowned on a single day when a terrible storm hit the fishing fleet.[26] The Berwickshire News, headlined the news with:

The greatest calamity that ever befell the fishing industry of this coast overtook it on Friday, when many of our brave fishermen, exposed to the violence of a turbulent hurricane seldom equalled for severity, went down to a watery grave. ...[27]
John Paterson drowned at sea aboard "Florida", 4 Miles off Eyemouth in the German Ocean (North Sea). His 15 year old daughter Isabella was Informant to his death registration, as well as to her brother Henry's death registration.[28]
The crew members lost on the Florida along with John Paterson were:

Thomas Fairbairn, aged 19. Half-brother to John Paterson-Fairbairn, above . No noted dependents.
Thomas Dougal, aged 33. Left a widow Ellen Crombie. His brother John drowned in the Invincible
William Crombie, aged 41. Left a widow Margaret Dougal who gave birth to Williamina on 13 February 1882. Their other dependent child was Isabella.
Paul Paterson was left off the newspaper report that immediately followed after the disaster:
The Florida—Wm. Crombie, married, family; John Craig, single; John Paterson, married, family; John Paterson, married, family; Tom Dougal, married, family; Thomas Fairbairn, single.[27]
John Paterson's "widow and son, William" were on the "Disaster Relief Roll", which only included boys under 14 years old and girls under 15 years old.[26]
Research Notes
Although baptised in Tweedmouth (Berwick-upon-Tweed), Northumberland, England, John Paterson was listed as born in Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland in all the Scotland census and on his baptism record. His parents moved to Eyemouth in 1833-34, after the birth of their son Prideaux who was baptized at Tweedmouth on 22 September 1833. All of Henry Paterson and Jane Collin's children after Prideaux up until the 1843 birth of their son George, were born at Eyemouth and baptised at Tweedmouth.
