Biography

A fantastic obituary was written on the 5th of April 1935 for William Paull. It reads as follows:

Another of the old pioneers of the district in the person of the late Mr William Paull passed peacefully away at the residence of his son, Mr Charles Paull, at West Coolup on Saturday evening. Full of years in which had borne the heat and burden of the day, the late hardy old pioneer has gone to his last long rest from his labours.

The deceased gentleman, who had reached the fine old age of 93 years (This is an an error here as was 97) was born at Redruth, Cornwall. He married Mary Ann Chapple, 74 years ago, having a family of ten children. Had the deceased been spared the old couple-Mrs Paull was one year his senior-would have celebrated their 75th anniver-sary of their wedding day on the 8th April.

With his wife and two sons and daughter, Frank, William and Elizabeth Ann, who were born In England, the late Mr Paull landed in Victoria 70 years ago. After same years in Victoria he was attracted to Western Australia, landing in Fremantle 50 years ago.

After arriving in Western Australia, he worked for some time on the railway at Fremantle and also later for Millars. When the Yilgarn and Southern Cross goldfields broke out he went there and for a time he was employed as an engine driver on the Central Goldmine at Southern Cross, which he gave up after time and started carting from Northam to Southern Cross. Later on getting more teams he continued in the carrying business from Southern Cross to Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie, through to Menzies.

In 1894 he gave up the carrying travelling his teams down landed at West Coolup, 40 years ago where he took up land and settled there with his family, and built the house where his son, Mr Charles Paull, is at present living in. During his resi-dence at West Coolup the late Mr Paull was an ardent worker for the district, and represented the South West Ward on the Murray Road Board for a number of years, until left the district to reside at Subiaco. It was mainly through his efforts that the hall at West Coolup was built. The deceased could always be depended upon to carry his share of the work in any matter for the benefit of the district and its people.

He left the district in 1912, but returned to the old home on September 8th, 1933, where he remained till his death. He was able to get about, and visited Pinjarra only four days before his death.

He leaves a widow and five sons, and three daughters (two of his daughters pre-deceased him), forty four grand children, and 60 great grand-children. The funeral, which took place on Monday afternoon last, was largely attended.

The remains were interred in the Anglican portion of the Pinjarra cemetery. The Rey Canon Burns officiated at the.
