Biography

Sarah Ann Paye, daughter of Charles (a labourer) and Caroline, of Albert Street, was baptised in Hackney on 3 April 1854. [1]

Seven year old Sarah is listed in the Fairey Street, Hackney home of her parents Charles (b.~1821) and Caroline (b.~1823) Pay. Charles is listed as a brickmaker. everyone in the home is listed as born in Middlesex.

Ten years later, seventeen year old Sarah Paye/Pape is listed living with her parents Charles and Caroline at Bruce Road West, Tower Hamlets, London. She is recorded as a House ?Servant, and was the eldest of five offspring in the household. [2]

The marriage of Sarah Pay and Benjamin Harwood was registered in Hackney, London in the second quarter of 1873. [3] They were married at St John, Hackney on 1 June 1873. It was a first marriage for both. Benjamin, of Caroline Street, was listed on the marriage document as a labourer. His father was listed as James Harwood, a labourer. Sarah's address was listed as Wood Street. Sarah's father was recorded as Charles Pay, also a labourer. Witnesses were Charles and ?Carion Wells. Although Sarah's name is written as Pay in the body of the marriage document, her signature could be Paye. [4]

In the 1881 Census, Benjamin and Sarah (surname recorded as Marwood) are listed living at 5 Cornwall Road, Tottenham, Middlesex. Benjamin's occupation is listed as Greengrocer employing one boy. They had two children: Benjamin (5) and Florence (9 months), and a servant in their household. [5]

By the time of the 1891 Census, they were living at Abney Gardens, with another three children: Charles, James and Emma. At this time, Benjamin is listed working as a Stoker and Sarah as a laundress. [6]

In the 1901 Census, they were living at 2, Georges Place, Hackney, London & Middlesex. Benjamin was now working as a general labourer, Sarah had no recorded occupation outside the home. One more child had joined their family: George W. b.~1895. [7]

The death of fifty year old Sarah Harwood, born 1856, was registered in Hackney during the first quarter of 1906. [8]
