Albert Peale was born in 1849 in Hecksherville, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Charles Willson Peale and Harriet Friel. He studied natural science and geology at the University of Pennsylvania and received a medical degree in 1841. From 1871 to 1879 he surveyed with Hayden beginning at Yellowstone. From 1898 to his death he was in charge of the paleobotanical collection at the Smithsonian.
Peale's name has been attached to several geological features in widely separated areas: Peale Island, the southernmost island in Yellowstone Lake, Mt. Peale, the highest peak in La Sal Mountains in eastern Utah, and Peale Mountains in eastern Caribou County, Idaho.[1]
