Biography

Alitha Pearson was born at Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England about 1796. She was baptised at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 21st August 1796, the daughter of George & Alitha Pearson.[1]

She married Edward Walker (as Alethea Pearson) at St Mary's Church, Nottingham, on the 23rd March 1818, after banns.[2] Witnesses to the marriage were William Hickman and Jane Walker.

They had the following identified children:

  • John Walker bp1819 - bur1819
  • Elizabeth Walker bp1820
  • Alithia or Alice Walker born 1824

Edward died sometime before 1840.

Alithia Walker married John Radford at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 21st August 1840[3]. John was a 44 year old widower, and needlemaker. His father was Samuel Radford, needlemaker. Alithea was a 41 year old widow, the daughter of George Pearson, victualler. Witnesses to the marriage were John Matthews and Martha Hutchinson.[4]

On the 1841 census, John and Alethia lived on Forest Street North, Sutton in Ashfield, where John was a needlemaker. In the household were Elizabeth, aged 20, Alithea, aged 17 and Alithia Pearson, aged 82.[5]

In 1851, John and Alithea were living at Engine Green, Sutton in Ashfield. Also in the household was daughter Elizabeth Trueman and son-in-law, Job Trueman and their children.[6][7]

On the 1861 census, John and Alithea lived on Forest Street, Sutton in Ashfield. Alithia's name was left blank on the census return, but her age is consistent with the previous census returns. She gave her occupation as "pyclet maker".[8]
