At the age of 15 Thomas went to work for Messrs.R.W.Warns as an apprentice shipbuilder, where he served 5 years. Later served 2 years with Mr.J.Barter of Balmain doing Architectural Drawing Training. He and his brother John went into business for themselves, they were known as ]Pelquest Brothers], Boatbuilders. Their first boat they built was a speedboat which they named "Challenger" this was in 1908. After his marriage Thomas and Ruby had a house built in Cammeray, this was later redesigned in 1939. It was changed from Federation to Oceanliner style facade. The double curved front still exists today, however it is no longer in family hands. Thomas & his brother John went to England during WW1 and served as Munition workers until the end of the war. He worked for the Port Jackson Steam Ship Company and went to Leith, Scotland to accompany back to Australia the "South Steyne".
