Biography

• Date of Birth comes from the Baptism record at St. Augustin Roman Catholic Church, South Rustico, P.E.I. Note that, in this case, the surname on the Baptismal record is transcribed as Prendergast. All the other children of James Pendergast and Ann Bassett were recorded as Pendergast. (It is more common that the 'r' near the beginning was left out, rather than added in.) ^[1]

• Probable year of death is 1936. This Edward Pendergast was born about 1853, although the headstone image is growing faint and the birth year is almost impossible to read. The Edward on this headstone was the husband of Ellen Ledwell, and there are birth/baptismal records of their five children. ^[2]

"HAD INTERESTING VISIT.—Mr. Edward Pendergast, Kensington returned on Monday evening from a two months visit to Seattle, Wash., Victoria, Vancouver, B. C., and other important centres. While abroad he visited his son, William, of that city. He also visited Capt. l. J. Ledwell. his Brother-in-law, Vancouver, who is now retired from sea-faring life."

• Edward lived with his son Jim and wife after their marriage in 1924, but moved out when he married Bertie Mahar. Edward and Bertie lived in Kensington. ^[3]. Edward died in 1936, in the middle of a measles outbreak in the Jim Pendergast household. His grand-daughter Mary died a few weeks after him.

• Charlottetown Guardian Friday March 27, 1936 pg 9...

"March 23rd, of Mr, Edward Pendergast, at the age of 83 years. Until a week before, Mr. Pendergast had been up and about in his usual health; he contracted a cold which developed into pneumonia and in spite of loving care and the best medical attention, he passed peacefully away. Born in Hope River and coming to Kensington in his youth, he engaged in farming...survived by his wife, a daughter and 2 sons."
