Biography

An estimate for Samuel Penduck's birth year is 1809, calculated from age 28 reported at death in 1838. However it is an unusual name, there is a record for a baptism of a Samuel Penduck in Thronbury, Gloucestershire, England in 1799 which therefore may be him, but there is no conclusive tying evidence other than rare name. ^[1]

Some documents Penduck is written as Pendrick, however Penduck is the spelling used on his will which he signed, so it is to be presumed this is the correct one.

There is a marriage for Samuel Penduck to Mary Pedro (transc. as Petro and Peters) in Quilon 1829. ^[2]

He was married to a woman called Mary Anne and they had two children in the period 1835-1837, before his untimely demise in 1838.

It is uncertain if the 1829 marriage to Mary, is the same person as Mary Anne who he had children with and named on his will.

It seems uncertain as her name is written as Mary Anne on the baptism, burial, & will documents; also there is no record found for a child until 1836; however an 1829 marriage with a birth year around 1819 doesn't suit at age 10, but marriages at age 13 or 14 happened, and may account for a delay before their daughter was born in 1835/1836. Samuel was estimated to be born in 1810 so 19 at this marriage so his spouse being a younger teen would suit.

No baptism record has been found for their daughter Mary Anne Penduck, however she was buried on the 13th of July 1836 in Trichinopoly. "Mary Anne, daughter of Samuel Pendrick, Gunner 2nd Battalion of Artillery, and Mary Anne, his wife, infant, was buried."^[3]

Their daughter Emma Penduck was born on the 30th of May 1837, and baptised in Trichinopoly on the 4th of July that year.^[4] Sadly, Emma also died as an infant and was buried on the 14th of December 1837, also in Trichinopoly.^[5]

Tragically Samuel died shortly thereafter at age 28. He wrote his will on the 20th of January 1838 and died and was buried the next day.^[6] Mary Anne received payments from the Lord Clive Fund from the 22nd of January.^[7]

"I Samuel Penduck Corporal (Gen No:1526) in the D Co 2nd Btn Arty of the Madras Presidency being sound in mind but weak in body... bequeath unto my dear wife Mary Anne Penduck... (signed with x mark)"^[8]
