James died in September 1858, aged 80, at his home in Meadrow, Godalming. He was buried on 25 Sep 1858 in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming, in the consecrated section. He was described in the burial record as "independent", probably meaning he was of independent means and was living off savings or investments.
His executors were Charles Gardener of Tonbridge Wells, Kent (chemist) and Charles William Penton (bef.1830-) of Tonbridge Wells, Kent (chemist's assistant).

Burial
Memorial Inscription
SACRED
TO THE MEMORY OF
JAMES PE[NT]ON
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
SEPTEMBER .. 1858,
AGED ..5
Although the inscription gives an age that appears to end in 5, the burial records give an age of 80 as does the death registration, so it seems likely that what looks like a 5 is due to the damage to the stone in that area.
Executors
Charles William Penton may have been James' nephew, and was certainly the nephew of Charles Gardener. If so, then it's likely James was born in Hampshire.
