Biography

Mary Pert, daughter of William Pert esq. of 'munnasinge' [Mountnessing] married Salter Harris esq on 13 Aug 1646 at Margaretting, Essex.[1]

Marriage settlement for Salter Harris and Mary Pert, dated '1670':[2]

"Settlement of Jointure; on marriage of Salter Herris and Mary Pert; consideration £1600 (marriage portion) [and counterpart]
(i) Dame Anne Herris (wid. of Sir Arthur Herris of Creeksea, kt.) and Salter Herris, esq. (s. and h. of Sir Art. H.);
(ii) William Pert of Mountnessing, esq., and daughter Mary;
(iii) Sir Henry Franckland of Thurtleby (co. York.), kt., and Henry Pert of Mid. Temple, London, gent.;
(iv) William Bowyer of Denham (co. Bucks.), esq., John Buxton of Buxton (co. Nort.), esq., Thomas Argoll of Great Baddow, esq., and Thomas Roberts of Braxted; esq.
It concerned the Manor of Apton Hall, messuages and lands in Canewdon; messuages, lands etc. called Eastware in Dengie; Croxons Farm in Stow Maries and (Cold) Norton; (no details), messuages and land called Waldons Marsh in Great Stambridge".

Four children of Salter Herris esq. were baptised at Broomfield, Essex:[3]

  • Thomas Herris[4] (baptised 21 Mar 1654/1655 at Broomfield Essex, son of Salter Herris esq and Mary)
  • William Herris (baptised 23 Dec 1657 at Broomfield Essex, son of Salter Herris esq)
  • Ann Herris (baptised 01 Feb 1654/1655 at Broomfield Essex, daughter of Salter Herris and Mary)
  • Mary Herris ( baptised 09 Jan 1661/1662 at Broomfield Essex, daughter of Salter Herris esq and Mary)

NB The will of Thomas Harris Esq. of Maldon, Essex, in 1659[4] bequeathed lands in Maldon, Essex, to his kinsman Salter Harris Esq, and after the death of Salter, to Thomas, the son of Salter Harris.

Mary may have died in 1662.[5]
