PEVEREL WILLIAM Son and heir of Hugh Peverel of Sampford

[CFR HIII] 3 April 1229. For the son and heir of Hugh Peverel of Sampford . To the sheriff of Devon . The king has taken the homage of William, son and heir of Hugh Peverel of Sampford, for all lands that Hugh held of the king in chief in his bailiwick which fall to William by hereditary right. Order that, having accepted security from the same William for the 100 marks by which he made fine with the king for the aforesaid lands, he is to cause him to have full seisin of the same lands without delay.

[CPR HIII] 20 April 1230 Portsmouth. Letters of protection for Willelmus Peverel de Samford as long as he is in the King’s service beyond the seas.

[Feet of Fines, Devon.] No. 265. At Exeter, 25 June 1238. Before ---------------.. Between William Caillawey, claimant, and WILLIAM PEVERELL, deforciant as to common of pasture in Sampford Peverel. William Peverell granted for himself & his heirs that the said William Caillewey & his heirs & their men of Muxbcar in Halberton shall have common of pasture over the whole moor of Leonard Moor in Halberton, Burlescombe and Sampford Peverel, for all manner of their beasts to drive in and out, outside the corn & the meadow enclosed by a ditch, without hindrance of the said William or his heirs or their men for ever. For this William Caillewey granted for himself & his heirs that henceforth they would render to William Peverell & his heirs 1 pound of wax every year at the feast of St. Michael for the said common of pasture.

PEVEREL THOMAS Younger son of Hugh Peverel, heir of brother William Peverel

[CFR HIII] 25 November 1241 Marlborough. For Thomas Peverel. The king has taken the homage of Thomas Peverel, brother and heir of William Peverel, for the lands that William held of the king in chief. Order to the sheriff of Devon that, having accepted security from Thomas for rendering 65s to the king for his relief, he is to cause him to have seisin of all lands and tenements formerly of William, of which he was seised as of fee on the day he set out on pilgrimage towards the Holy Land , and which fall to Thomas by inheritance in his bailiwick.


PEVEREL HUGH III Younger son of Hugh Peverel, heir of brother Thomas Peverel, coheir of uncle, Thomas II Sandford.

[CFR HIII] 20 September 1242. For Hugh Peverel. Hugh Peverel, brother and heir of Thomas Peverel, has performed fealty to the king for all lands that Thomas held of the king, so that he will perform his homage for them to the king as soon as the king returns into England. Order to the sheriff of Devon that, having accepted security from Hugh for rendering 65s for his relief, he is to cause him to have full seisin of all lands formerly of Thomas in his bailiwick, of which he was seised as of fee on the day he died
