Biography

John was born on 7 April 1843 in Skowhegan, Somerset, Maine, USA. He was the son of Thomas Theodore Phalen and Mary Francis (Kennedy) Phalen.[1][2] His middle name is variously said to be Polatheus, Palatheus, or Paulotheus.

He enlisted in the Civil War when he was 18. He was wounded in action, and he recovered poorly from his leg wound, so he was discharged from service. A year later he reenlisted, was captured and spent 3 weeks imprisoned in Clinton, Louisiana; then escaped, rejoined his unit, and served past the end of the war. He was discharged in June 1866.[3][2]

When John was 25 he married Ellen "Nellie" Walsh on 1 October 1868 in Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin.[4] They had 5 children, though one twin died at birth.[2]

Ellen died in 1878, perhaps from tuberculosis.

When John was 35 he married Ellen's sister Catherine Walsh on 19 November 1878 in Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin.[5] They had 1 child, George.

When George was 4 Catherine died in 1884, also said to be from tuberculosis.[2]

When John was 41 he married Ella Josephine Walsh on 20 November 1884 in Waukesha, Wisconsin.[6] She is not a known relative of his prior 2 wives. They went on to have 9 children; 2 died young.[2]

John died suddenly at the age of 82 on 22 February 1926 in Sheboygan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA.[1][2]

John was buried after 22 February 1926 in Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States of America.[7]
