John was born about 1821 in Newton, Midlothian.

In 1841 John, age 18, was in Haugh St Braid Lands, Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian. He was a Dyer.[1]

John married Janet (Bell) Philip (~1820 - ) on 25 September 1841 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[2]
