William Everett Phillips was born 28 May 1872 in Kansas. His father was Sylvester Phillips from Indiana and his mother was Mary Annabell Gasaway from Illinois. Sylvester Phillips and Mary Gasaway[1][2]
The 1880 Census of Galatia, Saline, Illinois outlines the Sylvester Phillips' family, yet looking at the image of the census it shows the census taker makes his S so similar to an A that the head of the household has been transcribed as an A. Phillips. The census reports S Phillips is a male age 32 from Indiana and his occupation is as a 'plasterman'. His wife Mary A Phillips is a female age 30 from Illinois. The children are Henry E son age 10 from Illinois, William E son age 8 from Kansas, Fred S son age 4 from Illinois, and Mary M daughter age six months from Illinois.[3]
William E Phillips married (1) Laura E Brandt 22 Apr 1897 in Forsyth, Custer, Montana. He was a single white male age 25 born by 1872 in Witchatanch, Greenwood, County, Kansas. His father was Sylvester Phillips and his mother was Annabell Gasaway. Laura E Brandt is a single white female age 20 born by 1877 birth place Alaganey City, Pennsylvania. Her father's name was Charles Brandt and her mother was Lena Hitsman.[4]
By 1900 William E Phillips and Laura Phillips started their family and the household consisted of the following people: William Phillips head male age 28 from Kansas. Laura Phillips wife female age 23 from Pennsylvania. Florence Phillips daughter age 2 from Montana, Sylvester Phillips widower age 53 of Indiana and father of William E Phillips. The census also cites William's mother was born in Illinois.[5]
At age 37, William Everett Phillips of Kansas married (3) Sophia Otina Olsen of Nebraska on 6 February 1909. I have been unable to locate William and Sophia's marriage record.
In the 1910 Census William E Phillips lives in Grant, Sherman, Oregon and the census cites his father's birthplace is Indiana and his mother's birth place is Illinois. The members of the household include Sophia Phillips wife age 19 of Nebraska, Christy S son age 0 and Joseph Doran a hired man age 23 of Ireland.[6]
In Baker, Oregon, William E Phillips is cited as being a 'teamster' in the 1920 US Census. On the census he uses his middle name of Everett. He is age 47 from Kansas. William's father Sylvester Phillips, widower, age 72 of Indiana again lives with William Everett Phillips. The census also reports his mother's birthplace as Illinois. The remainder of the household consist of Sophia Phillips his wife age 29 of Nebraska, Christie son age 10, Alton son age 7, Charlie son age 4, Clifford son age 2, and Norma daughter age 0. All the children were born in Oregon.[7]
On 6 December 1926 William E Phillips is registered in the Baker County General Land Office Records as recieving a Homestead Entry of 400 acres for Stock Raising, section 25, TWP 9; Authority: December 29, 1916: Homestead Entry-Stock Raising (39 Stat, 862)[8]
By 1930 William E Phillips and wife Sophia live in Baker City, Baker, Oregon. William is age 56 from Kansas, Sophia is age 38 from Nebraska. The children are as follows: Christie S son age 20, Henry A son age 17, Charles E son age 15, Clifford H son age 13, Norma A daughter age 11, Ruth E daughter age 9, Alene A daughter age 5, and Mildred L daughter age 1. (In the 1920 and 1940 Census' the second child of William and Sophia is named Alton or Alton Fred while in this 1930 census he is called Henry A which is inconsistent with other sources as well.[9]
FamilySearch has not catalogued this 1940 census. In it William E Phillips and wife Sophia Phillips still live in Baker, Baker, Oregon. William is 67 and Sophia is 49. The children still in the household are: Alton Fred age 27, Henry Clifford (previously cited as Clifford H) age 22, Ruth Evelyn age 18, Alene Adele age 15, Mildred Louise age 11, and Florence Annabelle age 8. The family also had a boarder named Charles Edward Ilson age 44 of Oregon.[10]
William Phillips' daughter Mildred Louise Phillips, age 19 birth year 1929, married Leonard Wm Valentine JR on 22 May 1948. William and Sophia Phillips are cited as the parents in the marriage record of their daughter Mildred Louise Phillips.[11] William Phillips' wife Mrs. Sophia Phillips is cited in the record of said marriage[12]
W E Phillips in entry for Christy Silvester Phillips, Oregon, World War II Draft Registration Cards 1940-1945. Christy registered for the draft on 16 Oct 1940 in Baker City, Baker, Oregon. His birth date is 14 Jan 1910, birth place is Rufus, Oregon, USA. He has red hair, green eyes, is 5'6" tall and weighs 143 lbs.[13]
William E Phillips is cited as W E Phillips in a GenealogyBank Historical Newspaper Obituaries for his brother Mr. Henry A Phillips. Their father is cited as Sylvester Phillips.[14]
William Everett Phillips died 1 Oct 1955, in Sweet Home, Linn, Oregon. He had been a resident of Oregon since 1905. He is buried at the 100F Cemetery in Lebanon, Linn, Oregon, USA.[1][2] This death certificate identifies William's mother's maiden name as Carmichael which is a mistake. Sylvester Phillips, William's father, was married to Mary Annabel Gassaway, and Sylvester's sister Harriet Marand Phillips was married to a Carmichael.
