Transport Driver Tripped Up

LOADS CARGO OF TROUBLE OVER WOMAN

ALEXANDER STEWART McGREGOR, a transport driver, was given as many chances to get back on the straight and narrow path of fidelity by his wife, Joan McGregor, of Gladstone-road, Highgate Hill, as Robert Brace gave that famous spider to make good. Unlike the spider, he needed more than the proverbial three goes, for he muffed that many. On at least two occasions did Mrs. McGregor ignore her lacerated wifely feelings when the amorous Alex was found out, but the third time proved too much, and there wasn't enough salve left in her equipment to anoint her bruised places. AND so the inevitable sequel was the appearance of the wife in Brisbane Supreme Court last week, when she asked Mr. Acting-Justice Matthews for a divorce, on the ground of her husband's adultery. It was on the third day of September, 1938, at Kedron, that the wedding bells pealed for the McGregors. They lived afterwards at Dutton Park and Highgate Hill, and there were two children. 'For the first three years we were happy,' the wife told the court. 'But prior to the birth of my second child I heard something. As a result, I asked my husband was he going out with a woman again. He told me he was not, and I gave him another chance.'

The wife further deposed that after McGregor's dis-charge from the A.I.F. in 1943, he commenced going out and coming home at two and three a.m. His excuses were always that he was playing cards or working. The husband, however, had not taken any great lesson from his first escape, for Mrs. McGregor stated, in February, 1945, following the arousing of her suspicions, she followed him to Victoria Park, where she saw him with a woman. Mrs. McGregor said she broke the bad news to him that she was going to get a divorce, but he still had one more ace up his sleeve. He played it the next day, when he asked for forgiveness. The wife, sticking out her chin once more, again forgave him. But the clouds were now milling up thick and fast on Mrs. McGregor's marital horizon, and the storm eventually broke on September 26, when, in company of Harris Edwards, private inquiry agent, she travelled to Laidley. There she discovered her husband and a wench in a car, about two and a half miles from town, at about 11.30 p.m. Edwards had his trusty torch with him, and when he switched it on, there was the erring husband and his little play-mate. The name of the 'lady' was bashfully refused. Harris Edwards corroborated this . story, after which His Honor granted a decree nisi for divorce, and also ordered that Amorous Alex foot the bill of costs. The wife is to have the custody of the children. Mr. F. E. Roberts (for the wife)' was Instructed by Messrs. Power & Power. [3]
