Biography

Gijsbertus Lodewijk Pieters was born on November 5, 1882 in Haarlem, North Holland to parents Gijsbertus Pieters and Trijntje (Landsman) Pieters.

At the age of 19, Gijsbertus Lodewijk Pieters married Cornelia Geertrudia van Bommel on May 21, 1902 in Haarlem, North Holland. His profession at the time of his marriage was a plaatsnijder (someone who makes dies or a printmaker who prints from an engraved printing plate; [1]) [2]

In 1902 Gijsbertus is listed in the Militia Lotting-registers and has blond hair and grey eyes. His profession was a plaatsnijder. [3]

In 1922 Gijsbertus was registered in the militia. [4]

Gijsbertus and Cornelia had eight children, seven who survived to adulthood.

At the age of 40, Gijsbertus and his oldest son, Cornelius, arrived on April 7, 1923 in New York, New York. They sailed on the ship SS Volendam, which left port from Rotterdam, Holland. Gijsbertus’ profession is listed as wood-graver and Cornelius’ profession is listed as an electrician. [5]

According to the 1930 US Federal Census, Gijsbertus was 47 years old and rented a home at 19 N Home St, Franklin, Somerset, NJ. He owned a radio set, had not attended school, could read and write and spoke Dutch and English. His naturalization is listed as “first papers.” His occupation was a block cutter for the wall-paper industry but was unemployed at the time. He was not a veteran. [6]

According to the 1940 US Federal Census, Gijsbertus was 57 years old and rented a home at 75 Carson Ave, Metuchen, Middlesex, NJ. His citizenship is listed as having first papers. The highest grade completed was elementary school, 6th grade. His employment details list him as unable to work. [7]

On April 25, 1942 at 59 years of age, Gijsbertus registered for the Draft for World War II. His address at the time was 27 S. Sixth Ave, Highland Park, Middlesex, NJ. He was unemployed at the time. He was 5’8” and 145lbs. He had a light complexion, gray hair and gray eyes. [8]
