In 1871, John Platts (age 17) was an apprentice to the wheelwright, William Jeffcoat in Leicester Road, Whitwick, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. ^[2]

In 1881 John Platts ( a wheelwright, age 27, born Barrow On Soar,) and his wife, Ann (machinist, 33, born Moulton, Lincolnshire) were living at 40 Peel Street, Leicester, St Margarets. (Peel Street no longer exists but it was situated off St George Street, parallel to Queen Street with Carrington Street in between. The Leicester Mercury Offices now occupy the site.) ^[3]

Research: I have had difficulty finding out who Ann is, because the couple seem to have had no children and she was only on one census (the 1881) with John, before he remarried.

I have found a marriage that may be the right one. John Platts to Nancy Willson in Billesdon in 1877. Nancy is a derivative name of Ann. ^[4]

There was a Nancy Wilson (64, married, sack mender born Moulton, Lincolnshire) who was on the 1911 census in Spalding, Lincolnshire without her husband. She filled in the years married (43) and number of children (nil). Maybe they separated and she reverted to her maiden name. However the years married would give a marriage date of 1868 when John was only 14 and he was still single on the 1871 census, so I'm doubtful this is the right woman. N.B. Moulton is 4.8 miles from Spalding. ^[5]

There was a marriage of Nancy Skeath to John Willson on 3rd June 1867 in Kirton-in-Holland, Lincolnshire, which is 10 miles from Spalding, so this is probably the Nancy Wilson on the 1911 as the years married are correct. ^[6]

Nancy Griggs Skeath was born in Spalding District in 1846 and baptised in Moulton on 25th October 1846. She was the daughter of John Skeath and Mary Griggs. ^[7][8]

In 1871, John Wilson (23) and wife Ann (24) were living in Holbeach Rd, Spalding. ^[9]

I can find no Willson children with mmn Skeath in the period in question. This would be correct for the Nancy Wilson on the 1911.

I can find no more censuses with Nancy/Ann Willson/Wilson and husband John.

In 1901, Nancy was a housekeeper in Spalding. ^[10]

There is however also the possibility that Ann was married before she lived with John or there was no marriage between them and she just left him.

There is also the possibility Ann Platts could have died before 1887 Q4, as John married for a second time then. However I can find no burial.

There was a Nancy Platts who died in 1920 in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, but she was an infant aged under 1 year. ^[11]

There was a Nancy Wilson who died in 1920, in Holbeach, Lincolnshire at age 74 years. ^[12]

So to sum up, there is a possibility that Ann Platts was Nancy Willson, that her marriages did not work out and that she ended up living apart, but there is insufficient evidence to prove it.

John Platts married Martha Cowley in 1887 quarter 4 in Leicester, Leicestershire, England ^[13]

In 1891, John (37, a wheelwright) and Martha (24) had two children, Sarah Ann (3) and John Henry (1). They were living in Welford Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. ^[14]

In 1901, the couple were living in The Nook, Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom with Sarah Ann (13, born Hugglescote, Leicestershire) and John Henry (11 born Leicester) as well as a daughter, Alice (9, born Leicester) and son Joseph W (7, born Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire). ^[15]

In 1911, the family were living at 144, Victoria Road East, Leicester, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. Charles Henry Maycock, daughter Sarah Ann's future husband, was visiting. ^[17]

At the marriage of daughter, Alice in 1914, John's middle name was given as William, though it is not on his birth registration.

John Platts died age 80. His death was registered in Q1 of 1934 in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. ^[18]
