Biography

John was born in 1869 in Greenwich, London, the son of Edward Plumridge and his wife Ann, nee Selves.

In the 1871 Census he is living with his parents in Greenwich. His father is a fancy draper and milliner. John is recorded as William E.S. In addition to the family there are 4 assistants, two servants and a housekeeper in the household.[1]

He migrated to Australia with his parents and younger brother Charles (and a nurse) in 1875, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on the "Melbourne" from London on 16 Nov 1875.[2]

His mother died in Brisbane, QLD in 1877[3] and his father died in Sydney in 1894.[4]

He was educated at the Normal School, Brisbane, QLD.[5]

In his youth he was a prominent Rugby Union footballer and keen tennis player. He was a keen yachtsman.[6]

John married Mary Ann Clark Ewing at Durisdeer, Kelvin Grove, Queensland on 19 Feb 1896.[7] There was one child - a son, John Eric Ewing born in 1896.

From 1899 John was a business man and company director of a confectionery company. He was a director of Bouchard and Plumridge of Brisbane, later Bouchard, Plumridge & Rankin, and later again, Plumridge Ltd. By 1917 he was employing more than 100 people.

He was a Councillor for Sandgate, QLD for 9 years and was Mayor of Sandgate in 1906.[8].

John was an active member of the Australian Military Forces and was appointed as a temporary Lieutenant for the duration of the War, effective from 01 Feb 1916.[9]

On 04 Jul 1917, John applied to become an Australian War Worker under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme to supply labourers and navvys for War work in the UK. At the time he was married and was living in Sandgate, QLD.

He was accepted and his agreement was signed on 20 Jul 1917. He was issued with Australian War Worker Badge No. 1203 and embarked on the SS "Medic" from Sydney, NSW on 01 Aug 1917, arriving at Liverpool, England on 12 Oct 1917.

Before he commenced work a cable had been received by authorities in London from Defence in Australia advising that he was suitable to be working as a ganger. He commenced work at R.N.A.S. Cranwell on 15 Oct 1917 in charge of organising QLD & WA men. He seems to have played a prominent role in improving conditions, heading off militancy and having grievances addressed.

In Dec 1917 the Ministry of Munitions advised R.N.A.S. Cranwell that they wished to employ him on inspection work for the Ministry. By Sep 1918 he was working at N.A.P.D.(National Aircraft Production Depot), Hendon and by Dec 1918 he had been transferred to OIC Aircraft Production Depot, Cobnor. His designation was amended from Australian War Worker to Australian Munitions Worker in Dec 1918. It was probably at this point where his official number changed from AWW 1203 to AMW 348.

In Apr 1919, authorities were advised by the Ministry of Munitions that they were transferring him from Headquarters York House to become Acting Superintendent of No. 1 Aircraft Salvage Depot at Hendon.

He returned to Australia on the SS "Port Macquarie" departing Tilbury on 12 Nov 1919. His agreement was terminated as complete on 26 Jan 1920 after disembarkation in Brisbane.

In 1921 he was granted a US Patent for a machine for coating confectionery.[10]

Following WW1, John was Vice President of the Queensland Chamber of Manufacturers (1921-23); President of the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce (1928-30)[11]; and President of the Federated Chambers of Commerce of Queensland (1933-34). He was also a prominent Freemason.[12]

His wife died in 1930.[13]

In later life, John was prominent in the St John Ambulance Association in QLD. He received the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in 1952[14] and received a long service medal in 1953. He was the honorary treasurer of the Association at that time.[15]

John died in Brisbane in 1955.
