Horace was born in Nelson in 1888,[1] the seventh son of Joseph Polglase and Caroline Tannant.[2] He was educated at Mangatainoka.[3]
He was a coachbuilder with Rouse and Hurrell of Wellington. He then had a business at Pongaroa. He was a Forester, a member of the Pongaroa Brass Band, and a keen bicycle racer. At the time of his enlistment he was a dairy farmer in Hamilton.[4]
He served in the NZ Army in the First World War, Service No. 12/1768.[5] He was part of the Third reinforcements.[6]
He was killed in action on 25 April 1915 during the landing at Gallipoli, Turkey and is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey.[7][8][9] He was 27.[10]
He is also remembered in the Mangatainoka Cemetery, Pahiatua, Manawatu-Wanaganui, New Zealand, where his parents lie.[11]
His death was registered in New Zealand in 1918.[12]
