Biography

William Edwin Pomfret's birth was registered in the January quarter of 1903 in the Winchester, Hampshire, England Registration District.

In the 1911 England Census of 2 April 1911, 8 years old William Edwin Pomfret, son of Edwin Pomfret (51), a Domestic Gardener and his mother Elizabeth Annie (41) a Dress Maker. They were living at Lashpool Cottage, Charlton, Creech St Michael, Taunton, Somerset, England, with daughters Cicely Ilene (13) and Kathleen Hilela (12), born in Goudhurst, Kent, and Barbara Aubrey (4), born in Newbury, Berkshire. William Edwin was born in Stratton, Hampshire.

Mr W E Pomfret, age 23 years, departed London, England on 30 October 1926 on the Orient Line ship "Osterley" for Melbourne, Australia. He gave his occupation as a Wool Sorter, living at 2 Woodside Mount, Haley Hill, Halifax, Yorkshire, England before his departure. The ship was expected to arrive in December of that year.

William Edward Pomfret first appears on the Electoral Rolls (ER) in 1931 at 68 Noone Street, Clifton Hill as a Jobber. Later in the same year he was on the ER at 61 Turner Street, Abbotsford, as a Millhand with his wife Eliza Annie Pomfret doing Home Duties, indicating that they had met and married and he had got a job at the new Austral Cotton and Silk Mill established by Eliza's father Ernest.

The photo was taken at the wedding of William's Sister-in-Law, Edna Irene Lumby to Harry Whitworth, in June 1934, and he was described as Harry's best mate!

William and Eliza would have their one child, named Lila Alice Pomfret, born on 11 May 1935 in Abbotsford, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia^[1], with the birth date recorded on Lila's tombstone.

On the 1936 ER they were at 180 Station Street, Alphington, with William Edward Pomfret a Millhand and Eliza Annie doing Home Duties. They would continue together on the ERs as can be seen on Eliza's profile until he passed away in 1971.

William Edward Pomfret died on 17 May 1971, with an Obituary in the Age Newspaper of 18 May 1971 - "(suddenly) (late Short Road) A tribute of respect from the executive and members of the Melbourne Harbour Trust Employees' Welfare Club. From the President and Hon. Sec." He was aged 68 years and died of a heart attack on the wharfs of Port Melbourne, though his death was registered in Williamstown, where he had been living with his wife Eliza Annie Pomfret. His Australia, Death Index record also gives his father's name as Edwin and mother's as Elizabet Goldsworthy.
