Biography

Joseph was born Aug. 22, 1861 son of Samuel G. Pool and Mary C. Brown of Chicago Cook County, Illinois, the family returned to Salem Perry Twp. Columbiana County, Ohio and Samuel and his brother Robert volunteered for the 11 Ohio Infantry and served 4 years of the Tennessee campaign,northern Virginia,Gettysburg and New York City. Joseph and his family moved to Lincoln Twp Shelby County, Iowa by 1870 where the family cleared the prairie land and raised grain crops and lived in a sod house.

Joseph moved to San Francisco, California and married Nellie Ellen Foley about 1890 and their first child Beatrice J. born 1891, Harry Francis born 1894, Angela born 1896, Raymond Joseph born 1897 and Margaret born 1901, all the children were raised and educated in Catholic schools. Joseph worked in the house moving and construction business and died an early death on April 4, 1903. The 1900 US Census states Robert is age 38 and Nellie is 27 with five children and living in San Francisco city and County, California. The family suffered a total loss on April 16, 1906 when the earthquake destroyed their home and were blessed to escape with their lives.

Joseph died on April 4, 1903 and his loyal wife raised 5 children on her own and remained a widow. Obituary: In this city, April 4, 1903 Joseph Robert Pool beloved husband of Nellie Ellen (Foley) Pool residents of 2630 Sacramento street, father of Beatrice, Harry, Angela, Raymond and Margaret. Joseph was a native of Chicago, Illinois, age 41 and 8 months, a member of Alta Lodge No. 205 and oriental Encampment No. 57 and worked as a business man real estate and repairing houses. Joseph leaves family in Iowa and Ohio.
