Biography

Margaretha immigrated from Germany in 1859, when she was in her early twenties.

Margaretha's birth year is uncertain.

According to gravestone in Calvary Cemetery, Middletown, George and Margaretha had a total of six children who died in infancy or childhood. The latest birth date listed is 1884 (Julie Rosenberger), when Margaretha was in her mid-40s.

The 1900 US Census confirms that Margaretha had a total of 13 children, with 7 still living. Her birth date is stated May 1837 (which would have made her about 46 when her last child was born, see note below.)

Her death record states May 27, 1838.

The 1910 and 1920 US Censuses state Margaretha's birth year to be 1839 (which would have made her 44 when her last child was born).

Margaretha may be a cousin of a George Popp, whose son John Popp married George and Margaretha Rosenberger's daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) in Milwaukee.

Note: It was not unheard of for women to give birth in their mid to late 40s when they had spent most of their adult life in pregnancy. (See Alexander Hamilton biography by Ron Chernow, page 147; "[Hamilton's Mother-in-Law] was seven months pregnant with her youngest daughter, Catharine, the last of twelve times she endured childbirth."
