Martinus Postma, born 14 July 1855[1] in Zwolle, son of Durk Postma and Ida Sijpkens. His mother died the year before the family emigrated to South Africa. They arrived on 9 July 1858 in Simonstown.[2]

Education and work

Martinus played a concrete role in the Reformed Church (Gereformeerde Kerk Suid Afrika) and furthering access to Christian education to young children.
Their father Rev. Dirk taught him and his brother Petrus Postma, from an early age, Hebrew, Latin and Greek. Apart from his Theological Schooling in Burgersdorp Martinus obtained an M-degree in Classical Languages. [3]
He served as Reverend( Ds) at following congregations : [4]
  • Middelburg, Cape Province 1890–1897
  • Johannesburg-Krugersdorp 1897–1904
  • Pretoria 1904–1906
  • Johannesburg 1909–1926

Marriage

Martinus was married twice.
1. Marriage.: Elizabeth Wilhelmina Josina (Spiller) Postma, at the Reformed church Burgersdorp on 17 July 1876. They were married by Pastor Dirk Postma (his father), and witnessed by C. Robberts.
Fourteen children were born from this union. Elizabeth died in 1907. Only six children were still alive when their father died at age 71.
2. Marriage.: Hester Johanna (de Klerk) Postma, widow of Casper Jan Hendrik Vorster. Martinus and Hester had no children.
