John Potter, M.A.,belonged to the family of Potter of Broadhembury (later of Iddesleigh), whose pedigree is recorded in the Visitation of 1620. He was instituted to the Rectory of Newton St. Petrock, 14th February, 1615/6.[2]
John married Prudence Myll on 1 October 1616 in Newton St Petrock, Devon, England.[3]

John Potter's signature is found on the 1641 Protestation Return for Newton St Petrock. (Rector)[6]
In his will written 9 December 1647, he requests to be buried in the chancel of Newton St Petrock near Prudence his first wife. He mentions:
His son Phillip Potter was named as executor.[7]
The inventory was taken January 2, 1648 by George Browneing, gentleman, and John Meddon.[8]
At the time of his death, John was Patron of the living of Newton St Petrock, as well as Rector.[2]
