Biography

Edward was born in 1863. He died in 1934 at the age of 70.

Parents: Edward William Pou 1830 - 1891 and Anna Maria (Smith) Pou 1835 - 1917.

Spouse: Caroline Horton (Ihrie) Pou 1863 - 1945. They were married 10/18/1887 in Center Township, Chatham, North Carolina. Per North Carolina, County Marriages, 1762 - 1979. Findagrave #17986976

Edward moved to North Carolina with his parents in 1867, where he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and studied law. His fraternity was Alpha Tau Omega. After practicing law in Smithfield, North Carolina for a number of years, he served as a Democratic U.S. Representative from the North Carolina 4th District, 1901–1934, and served as chairman of the Committee on Claims (abolished in 1946) and then of the House Rules Committee. He died in Washington, D.C., 4/1/1934, while still in office.

Asked how to say his name, he told The Literary Digest "Though my name is spelled Pou, it is pronounced as though it were spelled pew or pugh."^[1]
