Biography

Edward Arthur was born in 1875. He was the son of Maurice Goggan Power and Mary Josephine Milgrew. [1] He married Elizabeth Jane Day in 1895 [2] They separated around 1921. He passed away in 1924

A tragic occurrence at Plumtree, Rhodesia, resulted in the death of Edward Power a former headmaster of Whangarei, Now Zealand. He came to South Africa two years ago and engaged in teaching. Later, owing to suffering from neuritis, he went farming at Plumtree, from where reports now state that in a fit of jealousy Power shot and wounded his wife, who escaped by a window and took refuge with neighbours. Power then set fire to the house and perished in the flames. AN ERRONEOUS REPORT MRS POWER IN DOMINION By Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND, This day, There is an even greater element of tragedy in the death of Mr Edward Power, formerly- headmaster of the Whangarei school, than the cablegram from South Africa. suggests. The cablegram refers to his attempt to murder his wife, but his wife is still in Auckland. Edward Power, who was about 52 years of age, was a teacher under the Auckland Education Board for about 3O years. He was for some years in the Hokianga district and subsequently at Waiorongomai, near Te Aroha. In 1906 he was appointed headmaster at Te Kuiti and occupied that position till 1919, when he was appointed headmaster at Whangarei, About three years ago Mr Power, resigned his position at Whangarei, and left the Dominion, his whereabouts being unknown to his most intimate friends. He left an adult family of six and his wife in the Dominion. Deceased was well-known in bowling circles, having “ skipped ” teams in Auckland and Dominion tournaments. His father was the late Mr Maurice G. Power, well-known hotelkeeper at Paeroa and Waihi for many years. His brother, the late Mr M, G. ("Bert”) Power, was formerly Mayor of Waihi..[3]
