Abel Pratt, Sr. was born in 1775 in Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, the son of Deacon Phineas Pratt (1747-1813) and Hepsibah/Hepzibah Pratt Pratt (1749/175 -1813).
Abel married Clarissa "Clarry" Hayden (1780–1844), both of Saybrook, on 16 Feb 1800 or 2 Aug 1800. Their children were:

Richard Hamilton Pratt (1807–1888)
Theodore Dwight Pratt (1809/1811–1860)
Horace H. Pratt (1812–1894)

Harriet Eliza (Pratt) Crittenden (1818–1898)
Myra Jannet Pratt (1824– )
Abel was a mechanic and one of the earliest manufacturers of ivory combs.
Abel died at age 89 in 1864 in Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, and was buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Essex, Middlesex County, Connecticut.
