The Bahraini Monarchy
The first monarch of Bahrain was Ahmed ibn Muhammad ibn Khalifa, who was the leader of the Bani Utbah invasion of Bahrain. He ruled from 1783 to 1795. Several rulers followed him, each holding the title of hakim.
In 1971, following Britain’s decision to withdraw all of its forces from the gulf, Sheikh Isa ibn Salman Al Khalifah proclaimed Bahrain’s independence. A treaty of friendship was signed with the United Kingdom, terminating Bahrain’s status as a British protectorate, and Sheikh Isa was designated as the emir.
On February 14, 2002, the emir of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, declared Bahrain a kingdom and proclaimed himself the nation's first king. The king enjoys wide-ranging powers, which include appointing the prime minister and the cabinet, holding supreme command over the Defense Force, chairing the Higher Judicial Council, appointing the parliament’s upper house and dissolving its elected lower house.
