Biography

Mary Jane was born in 1836. She was the daughter of Isham Purdy and Roxcea Wiley. In 1857, she and her husband are listed in her brother, Dennis Purdy's will. She passed away in 1928 at which time her obituary in the Emporia Weekly Gazette was as follows:

Mrs. Mary Jane Ward Dead

A short funeral service for Mrs. Mary Jane Ward, 92, who lived in Emporia about 15 years ago, was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'-clock in Maplewood cemetery, where Mrs. Ward was burled. Mrs. Ward was the widow of the late Rev. Samuel Ward. Rev. K. L. Layne, pastor of the Arundel Avenue Presbyterian church conducted the services. Mary Jane Purdy was born in Illinois, May 6, 1838. She died in Enid, Okla., July 16, 1928. Shy was married to Rev. Samuel Ward in Illinois, April 10, 1858.. Six children were born to this union. They are: Bertha Jana, who died in childhood; William D. Ward, who died in Los Angeles, Calif., about a year ago; Mrs. Ann Hutten, who lives in Texas. Mrs. Lola May McGill, Enid. Okla.; Rev. Clement Ward, of Mont Clair, N. Y.; and Rev. Samuel I. Ward. of Dwight.

Mr. Ward died about 15 years ago and after his death Mrs. Ward lived in Enid Okla,, with her daughter, Mrs. McGill. Mrs. Ward had been in poor health for about three years, but her death came unexpectedly.
