Biography

From History of Pittsburgh and Environs:

James H., married Ettie Bryson, daughter of Hon. S. A. Purviance;

U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1827 and commenced to practice law in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was prosecuting attorney of Warren County, a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1838-39), a delegate to the Whig National Convention in 1844 and to the Republican National Convention in 1855. In 1856, he was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as Attorney General of Pennsylvania, in 1861 and resumed the practice of law in Pittsburgh, until he retired in 1876.
