Hugh was a banker and stockman. He was also somewhat of a philanthropist. He purchased shoes, clothing and candy for needy children. Cause of death was reported to be heart failure, but popular belief was that he simply died of a broken heart. His obituary states he never recovered from losing his wife Lide three years prior to his own death.

Research Notes

The most probable correct date of birth for the Hugh of this profile is November 8, 1874, which matches his US Passport record but it does not match the inscription on his headstone and the information provided in his obituary. Irish birth record records a child named Hugh with a date of birth of November 19, 1873. It is probable that the Hugh Ralston born to John and Mary on November 19, 1873, died in infancy, and represents the 4th child born to the couple that died in infancy.
