John was born about 1843^[1] in Pennsylvania, United States.

John was living in Garnett, Kansas when he enlisted and was mustered in on 21 Feb 1862 into the Union Army as Private in Company A, 2nd Regiment, Kansas Cavalry. He mustered out on 14 Apr 1865 in Little Rock, Arkansas.^[2][3]

2nd Kansas Cavalry was organized at Kansas City, Kansas beginning 8 Nov 1861, but its designation was changed to 9th Kansas Infantry on 4 Feb 1862. It was changed again on 5 Mar 1862 to 2nd Kansas Cavalry. During John's time in service, the Regiment was engaged in the Barrles of Perryville, Old Fort Wayne, Prairie Grove, and Devil's Backbone.^[4]

He was married to Cylthie J.^[5]

John and his wife Cylthie were living in Pasadena in 1888.^[6]He also registered to vote that year in Pasadena.^[7]

He passed away 2 Oct 1889 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, United States^[8][9] and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.^[1]

Research Notes

Civil War enlistment dates differ between Veterans Administration Master Index (31 Aug 1863) and State of Kansas Adjutant General Report (21 Feb 1862). Discharge dates are consistent.

A John Ramsey, b. 1843, appeared in the 1850 household as aged 7 of James and Rachel Ramsey in Armagh Township, Mifflin, Pennsylvania^[10] He also appeared in the same household in the same location in 1860.^[11]
