Biography

Jane Randall was born in Thomaston, Knox, Maine^[1].

Jane (Randall/Rendell/Rindill) Field was the mother of Nancy J (Field) Webber who died on 28 Oct 1898 in Searsport, , Maine at the age of 72. The father of Nancy is listed as James Field^[2]. A duplicate record also exists that spells her maiden name as Rindill^[3].

Jane Field is found living with her family in Searport, Maine in the 1850^[4] and 1860^[5] censuses. In 1850 James was 74 and Jane 61 and living with them were Andrew J Field (age 17), Ambrose R Field (age 25), Sarah Field (age 26), Lydia Staples (age 35), Betsey G Staples (age 32), and possibly two others. The occupation of James Field is listed as farmer and Ambrose R Field is a sailor. In 1860 Jane Field (age 71) was living in the household of her son Andrew J Field, a farmer age 26, along with Betsey Staples, age 41.

James Field and Jane (Randall) Field are listed as the parents for Andrew J Field (b. Searsport, Maine 1832) who died on 14 Jul 1906 in Bangor, Maine ^[6]. This record lists the birthplace of the mother as Thomaston, Maine, which is about 35 miles from Searsport.

JAMES FERNALD FIELD was born in Kittery, ME on July 15, 1775, the first son of Daniel and Mary (Fernald) Field. On Jan.26, 1797 he married Jane Black who was born April 29, 1775, the daughter of Henry and Sarah (Stowers) Black of Searsport. James and Jane (Black) had nine children and settled in N. Searsport where in 1801 James bought 100 acres of land next to Half Moon Pond. Later in 1826 he sold 62 acres of this land to his son Daniel Field III.

Jane (Black) Field died Feb. 22, 1824 and James married for a second time to JANE RANDALL who was born March 29,1788 the daughter of James and Polly (Toburn ) Randall. They were married Aug. 19, 1824 and had five children. Jane Randall was married first to John Clifford and had one child, and second to James Staples by whom she had three children.

Research Notes

Documentation has been found for the first marriage of James Fernald Field (to Jane Black)^[15]. This reference also includes the title "Capt." for James Field.

In the 1870 census, Betsey G. Staples, age 50, resides in the same household as a John Clifford, age 61, in Waldo, Prospect, Maine^[16]. Could this be her half-brother from her mother's first marriage?
