Biography

Alfred K. Rankin, 1825-1842, was born and died in Maine. He was the eldest born child of Stephen C. Rankin and Elmira Kimball, who had ten children, born between 1825 and 1856. There were ten years from Alfred’s birth to the next child’s birth. Also, at the time of Alfred’s birth, his parents would have been very young (16 and 14), which is not unheard of, but still unusual. And, there was another son named Alfred S. Rankin, born in 1840 (two years before Alfred K. died). NOTE: these facts MAY indicate that Alfred K. was not the son of Stephen C. Rankin and Elmira Kimball, but cemetery records indicate that he was indeed their child. ^[1]

Elmira and Stephen C. Rankin are buried with four of their children, all of whom died young (before age 18):

James W., d. 19 Sept. 1850, aged 15ys, 8mos

Asa M., d. 11 Sept. 1847, aged 1yr, 2 mos

Emily F., d. 23 Sept. 1858, aged 2ys, 5mos, 23 days

These four and their parents are buried together at Old Settlers-Town Hall Cemetery, Amherst, Hancock, Maine, according to a 1973 transcription of cemetery records. ^[2]

Alfred K. Rankin is listed on a massive memorial stone along with his three siblings and over 23 others who are buried at Old Settlers Cemetery, Amherst, Maine. NOTE: Alfred K. has no individual stone; his three siblings do. His parents are not listed on FindAGrave at this cemetery, but cemetery records indicate that they are interred here. ^[3]
