Biography

Martin was born on 11 November 1880 at the farmstead of Kropf, St. Ulrich am Johannserberg, Kärnten, Austria[1]. He was the son of Johann Rapoldi and Walburga Jandl. He passed away, age 45, on 18 October 1926. It is quite likely that he died of kidney failure caused by Polycystic Kidney Disease, a heredity desease which runs in the family.

His obituary, in the Innsbrucker Nachrichten reads, in translation: "Martin Rapoldi was born in St. Johann (Karnten). Son of a farmer, apprenticed as a carpenter in Klagenfurt and moved to Tirol in 1904 (age 24) where he initially worked in his trade but by 1906 he was doing editorials in the VolksZeitung. Established his own printshop and developed the VolkZeitung into a daily newspaper. Turned down an offer from Austerlitz to be an editor on the “Workers News”. Member of the Tirol National government, 1919 state representative; from 1919 member of the city council of Innsbruck. 1919-1923 deputy mayor, then responsible for the city waterworks. He played a particular role in Tirol independence politics in 1918-1919."

Also, from 2010: "Martin Rapoldi (1880-1926). If a non-Tyrolean, only 46 years old and a Social Democrat, receives a grave of honor from the city, then he has probably done a lot for this city. He was one of the most important local politicians in the city and creator of the modern Innsbruck municipal works. His memorial in Kranebitten was destroyed in 1934 by local soldiers. The Rapoldi Park in the city center is still named after him. Maria and Martin Rapoldi are buried in an honorary grave in the city of Innsbruck."
