Mary Ann Rea was born on 6 January 1850 in England to William Rea and Ann (Sparks) Rea. [1] She was baptised on 7 December 1856 with her sister Emma at St Philip's Parish Church in Clerkenwell, Islington, Middlesex. Her father is noted as a compositor; and at this time the family were living at 19 Margaret Street, Clerkenwell. [1]
Mary Ann appears to have been named in honour of her elder sister, also called Mary Ann, who had died in 1839 at the age of two years.
At the time of the 1871 census she was lodging with Edward and Mary Ann Readman (both noted as "Housekeeper") at 35-38 New Bridge Street, Castle Baynard, St Ann, Blackfriars (it looks like it was a business rather than a home) and working as a barmaid.
She married Joshua Henry Spicer later that year, on 18 September 1871, at St. Mary parish church in Islington, Islington, England. [2]
They had two children in England, one of whom died soon after birth, and emigrated to Montreal, Canada in about 1875. Their son Harry was then born in 1876 just outside Montreal.
Both Mary Ann and Joshua were active members of the local church and the Termperance League.
She died in 1938 at the home of her daughter.
