Biography

Ralph was a Shearsby farmer and fellmonger born in 1817 and baptised there on 9 February 1817. He was the son of Thomas Read and Elizabeth Hobill ^[1]. At that time his father was a fellmonger ^[2].

Ralph married Mary Binsley on 3 May 1836 in Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire ^[3]. Their children were:

• John, 1838, Shearsby
• Elizabeth, 1843, Shearsby ^[4][5]
• Mary Jane, 1846, Shearsby ^[6]
• Joseph, 1851, Shearsby ^[7]
• Ann Alice, 1858, Shearsby ^[8]

In 1841 he was a fellmonger living in Mill Street, Shearsby with his wife, son John and female servant Elizabeth Binley (20) ^[9].

In 1851 he was a farmer living in Hill Street, Shearsby ^[10].

In 1861 he worked as a fellmonger and lived in Fenney Lane, Shearsby with wife Mary, children Joseph (10), Elizabeth (18), Mary Jane (16), Ann Alice (3) and boarder Ellen Worthen (24) village school mistress from London ^[11].

In the 1871 census Ralph (age 54), Fellmonger & Landowner, was the married head of household in Shearsby ^[12].

In the 1881 census Ralph (age 64), fellmonger (invalid), was the widowed head of household on Fenny Lane, Shearsby ^[13].

Ralph (age 64) died on 11 September 1881 and was buried on 15 September in Shearsby ^[14][15].

Ralph Read was born in Leicestershire, England.
