Biography

Antonio Rebaudengo has Italian Roots.

Antonio was born in Piozzo, Cuneo, Piemonte, Italy. His parents were Domenico Rebaudengo and Maria Ferrero. This information comes from the marriage record of his brother Cesare who preceded him to Calgary, Alberta, by a number of years. During March 1922, Antonio, his wife Angela and son Mario arrived in North America. (See immigration information below which also gives a physical description.)

Like his brother and many of his Bridgeland neighbors, Antonio became employed by the C.P.R. and worked as a machinist at the Ogden shops.

While in Calgary, Antonio and his wife Angela became quite involved in the Piemontese Society which had a member or members who took many photographs, later donated to the Glenbow Archives. One photograph shows him with his young neighbor Algie Armstead who became Calgary's first Black transit driver. Antonio also founded the Fascio party in Calgary. In the late 1930's he became the honorary Italian consul in Calgary.

Antonio's involvement with the Fascio party caused him to be interned for three years as an "enemy alien" during World War II. He refused to name names and his wife burned the book listing membership in their club. Antonio was at internment camps in Kananaskis, Alberta; Petawawa, Ontario; and Fredericton, New Brunswick. Ironically his son Mario was able to join the armed forces in order to help support his mother although he was registered as an "enemy alien."

When Antonio returned from exile, he went back to work for the CPR until his retirement in 1957.

In February 1980, Antonio and Angela celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Antonio died in 1982 at the age of 90 years. According to his obituary, his remains were cremated.

Research Notes

How much overlap was there between the members of the Piemontese Society and Rebaudengo's fascist organization?
