Bernard Redican, Jr. was born about 1864 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He married Bridget “Bell” O’Brien. Bridget was born in Ireland, and immigrated in 1882. She died in 1932.
Bernard’s father, Bernard Redican, Sr., born about 1824 in Ireland, who immigrated to the US, became a naturalized citizen in Chicago, Illinois in 1856. In 1864 the family was in Louisiana, where Bernard, Jr. was born. Bernard, Sr. was living in California as early as 1871 where his son Thomas was born, and he was living in Los Angeles in 1894.
Bernard Redican, Jr., 23, born in Louisiana, and Bridget O’Brien, 22, born in Ireland, were married on 21 June 1887 in Los Angeles county, California. Both were residents of Los Angeles. Witnesses were Thomas Redican and Ellen Madden, both of Los Angeles. Fr. P. Hairnet, Catholic priest, officiated. [1]
On 3 August 1892, Bernard Redican, 28, registered to vote. He was born in Louisiana and lived in Stockton, California, and worked as a plasterer. Bernard was 6’ 1” tall, light complected, with blue eyes and brown hair. He had a scar on his left hand and thumb (from) tool marks. [2]
Bernard, Jr., and his father and brother Thomas appear on the same 1894 voter registration roll for Los Angeles, California:
On 6 August 1896, Bernard Redican, Jr. registered to vote in Los Angeles. He lived at 713 E. 2nd St., Los Angeles. A plasterer, born in Louisiana, he was 32, 6’ 1”, with light complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He had two small scars on his left hand. Bernard could read and write. [4]
Twin sons were born to Bernard and Bridget on 4 October 1901 at 838 Stevenson Ave., Los Angeles. The boys were named Elmer J. and Bernard. [5] [6] NOTE: one twin, Bernard, died before 1910.
In 1910, the Redican family lived at 1 Bishop Street, Los Angeles, California. The household included Bernard Redican, 46, born in Louisiana, whose father was b. in Ireland, and his mother was b. in England. He was a house plasterer who rented their home; his wife of 22 years, Bridget, 45, b. in Ireland, as were her parents. Both Bernard and Bridget could read and write. Bridget had had eight children, seven of whom were living; their seven children, all b. in California: John J., 19, a plasterer; Mary, 17, a milliner; Daisy, 16, a saleswoman in a dry goods store; William, 14; Elmer, 8, in school; Hazel, 5, in school; and Theodore, 3. At the time of the Census in 1920, and in 1930, Bernard Redican was married, but lived separately from his wife and family. Both households were in the city of Los Angeles.
In 1920, Bernard Redican lived in a hotel at 116 S. First Street (Chinatown), Los Angeles. August M. Anderson, 63, from Sweden was the owner of the hotel. Bernard Redican, 56, born in Louisiana, whose parents were born in Ireland, was married, and worked as a plasterer, was a lodger at the hotel, along with 26 others. [8]
In 1930, Bernard Redican, 66, married, born in Louisiana, was 23 when he first married. He worked as a plasterer, and lived in a hotel at 202 Maine Street, Los Angeles. Charles L. Clair, 44, of Colorado, was the hotel proprietor. Twenty-one other lodgers lived at the hotel. [9]
His son Elmer J. Redican died on 22 July 1944, aged 42, and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. [10]
The birth record for an unnamed daughter, who was born 10 July 1904 at 170 Hewitt Street, Los Angeles shows that the father, Bernard Redican, was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the mother, Bridget O’Brien, was born in Cork, Ireland. [11]
