Jacob Friedrich (Frederick J.) Rehfuss was born at Loßburg in the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) region of Württemberg in 1824, son of Jacob Rehfuß and Charlotte Hirschmann, left for America in 1833 with his mother and stepfather and by 1837 was in living in Brooklyn, New York, where he was listed with his family as "Frederick Kerber" in the 1850 census. Frederick was married and father of a one year old daughter by June, 1855, when he is listed in a state census. He and his family lived in Williamsburg in Brooklyn for about five or six years then moved the "Eastern District" of Brooklyn where he remained the rest of his life. He worked most of his life as a spinner in the silk industry and passed away in Brooklyn in 1908. His name appears as Rehfuss in early records in New York, but in later year it also appears as Rehfus or Rufus in the city directory and on his tombstone as Rufus.
