Biography

James Reitz was born in Apr 1890 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York. He was the son of John Reitz and Rosa, whose surname is currently unknown.

James' father immigrated to the United States from Italy in the late 1880s. The family's surname in Italy was "Rizzo", but changed to "Reitz" when the Rizzo family settled in the United States.

James' parents moved to the city of Oswego, Oswego, New York around the turn of the century, where James' mother passed away in 1899.

James' and his four siblings were placed in care at Saint Francis Home, a Catholic orphanage in the town of Oswego, Oswego, New York, until his father was able to get things straightened around.

James died fairly young. He did not marry or have any children.

James passed away on 10 Aug 1914 in Oswego, Oswego, New York.[1]

Obituary

DIED - RITZ - In this city, August 10, 1914, James Ritz, in his 24th year.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral Wednesday, August 12, from the residence of his sister, Mrs. James Denmore, 63 West Tenth street, at 9 a.m., and at St. Mary's church at 9:30 a.m.[1]

Census Enumerations

1900 Oswego, Oswego, New York James (age 10) was an inmate at Saint Francis Home. His siblings, Anna, James, Martin, Phillip and Anna, also lived in the orphanage with him. Their father, John, has not yet been located this census year.[2]
1905 Oswego, Oswego, New York James (age 15) lived in his father's household at 229 Liberty Street. He was already working by this point in time, as a laborer at the Diamond Match Factory in Oswego.[3]
