Biography

Clarence Thomas Rhodes was born on January 14, 1890 in Volcano, Amador, California, United States.[1] His parents were Robert Wesley Rhodes and Elizabeth "Lizzie" McKeen.[2][3]

He married Sarah G. Simpson (or Stanley ) around 1910.[4]

In the 1920 census Sarah reports that she is divorced.[5] She is living with her mother and her son Stanley Rhodes.

Clarence married Beatrice Robinson on December 27, 1916.[2][6]

By 1924, Clarence and Beatrice were concessionaires at Lehman Caves National Monument, near Baker, Nevada (now Great Basin National Park).[7] They ran tourist accomodations at the Lehman caves in Great Basin, providing cabins, hot meals, and entertainment.

In 1930 Clarence and Beatrice were living in Baker, White Pine, Nevada, United States.[8] Charles Davis, living with them and listed as employee, was a building contractor who has been credited with building or remodeling the tourist facilities.

They sold their resort to the county in 1933.[9]

He married Gertrude Hofstetter on May 01, 1934 in Los Angeles, California, United States.[3]

By 1935, Clarence and Gertrude were living in Contra Costa, California, United States.[10]

He died on November 14, 1951 in Oakland, Alameda, California.[11][12][13]

  • Birth Year Discrepancy There are conflicting sources for Clarence's year of birth. I have chosen to believe the earlier sources.
    • 1920 census reports: 1890[14]
    • WWI draft registration reports: 14 January 1890[1]
    • WWII draft registration reports: 14 January 1892[15]
    • Social security record reports: 14 January 1892[13]
  • Earlier Death Reported One of the signs at the Rhodes cabin at Great Basin National Park reports that Clarence died in a mining accident after or around 1933.[9] However this is in conflict with his third marriage in 1934[3] and with his social security record.[13] The grooms parents are the same on the records for the marriage to Beatrice as for the marriage to Gertrude.
  • Children I assume that the son reported on the WWI draft registration[1] is the son Stanley Rhodes that was living with Sarah in the 1920 census.[14] (not another son)
