Margaret was born in 1927. She passed away in 2015.
Margaret Richter Dugi passed away in Cuero, Texas, on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the age of 87. Born to Pete and Veronica Richter, Margaret was raised on the family ranch in Stockdale, Texas.
She attended school in Sutherland Springs and graduated as valedictorian of her senior class. At age 19, she met Daniel Dugi when they were attendants in her brother Fabian and his wife Bina’s wedding. Margie and Daniel married six months later and made their home on the family ranch near Kosciusko, Texas, spending 56 years together. They had 12 children, 22 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Margie spent her life as a wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening, growing delicious vegetables, which she would cook, can, freeze, and dehydrate. She was an exceptionally gifted cook, always making delicious meals and snacks for her family. She took great joy in cooking fabulous Sunday lunches and special birthday and holiday meals. Her fried chicken and chicken and dumplings were special favorites of her children and grandchildren and frequently requested. She always made sure to end the meals with coffee and her homemade desserts, like oatmeal cake, cherry pie and Heath Bar Rice Krispy treats. She would constantly look through magazines and cookbooks to find new recipes and would usually put her own touch on them, making them even better. And she loved sharing her cooking with others. Every holiday season, she would give family and friends gifts of her homemade blackberry jelly and fruitcake.
Margie was a foodie long before the term was coined. She always enjoyed buying new kitchen gadgets and back in the 1970’s was making homemade yogurt, noodles, butter, and cottage cheese, decades before it became trendy.
She was also a talented seamstress and frequently made dresses for her girls and passed the talent on to her daughters, teaching them how to sew. Every season, she made new curtains for her kitchen and breakfast nook to brighten the rooms, and from the windows in those rooms, you could see the lovely blooming roses she so enjoyed growing.
Margaret was a devoted Catholic and dedicated countless hours to her church, St. Anne’s in Kosciusko, Texas. Through the years she served as a Eucharistic minister, religious education teacher, and a member of the Ladies’ Altar Society. Attending daily mass brought her great joy, and she was deeply devoted to Mary, frequently leading the rosary and sharing her faith with others. In her later years, she especially enjoyed baking special treats for the monthly senior citizen mass and luncheon.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents Pete and Veronica Richter, her husband Daniel Dugi, her son Thomas Dugi, her son-in-law Charlie Gray, and her brother Fabian Richter.
She is survived by her eleven children: Donald Dugi (and wife Becky); Pamela Longbotham (and husband Ramsey); Judith Stanton (and husband Peter); Deidre Gray; Daniel Dugi, Jr. (and wife Bli); Michael Dugi (and wife Sonya); Denise Bowers (and husband Billy); Kevin Dugi; Roberta Schulze (and husband Russell); Jareth Dugi (and wife Laurie); and Dina Martinez (and husband Nash).
