Biography

William Rives was born about 1736 in Albemarle Parish, Sussex Co., Colony of Virginia, son of Timothy Rives (1706–1782).

William married Lucy Shands (born on January 9, 1740 in Albemarle Parish, Surry; daughter of William Shands Jr and Priscilla (Moss) Shands). Their children were:

• Mary Rives (1763– )
• Robert Rives (1764–1845)

William died on May 21, 1778 in Albemarle Parish, Virginia, aged about 41.^[1]

Research Notes

Sussex County was formed from the part of Surry County located south of the Blackwater River in 1753. The boundaries coincided with the boundaries of Albemarle Parish, formed in 1738.^[2]
