Biography

Wiliiam was born on 5 June 1839, and was baptised at Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, on 16 June 1839. A copy of his baptismal record[1] has been uploaded to the Images. He was the son of William Robertson, a coal miner, and his wife Mary Robertson.

He grew up with his family in Cambuslang, as evidenced by his appearances in the Scotland Censuses of 1841[2], where they lived at Silver Banks; and 1851[3], where they lived at West Coats.

On 21 September 1860, William married Ann Paterson, a cotton mill worker from Bridgeton, Glasgow, at 79 Marshall Street, Wishaw. A copy of their marriage record[4] has been uploaded to the images.

They lived most of their lives in vicinity of Craigneuk, Lanarkshire, where William toiled as a coal miner, as evidenced by their listings in the Scotland Censuses of 1861[5] where they lived at 103 Main Street, Wishaw; 1871[6] where they lived at 10 Ravenscraig Road, Ravenscraig; 1881[7] where they lived at Summerlee Red Row, Craigneuk; 1891[8] where they lived at 12 Garibaldi Square, Craigneuk; and 1901[9] where they lived at Dalziel Home Farm.

William passed away aged 64, on 8 May 1904[10] in the parish of Dalziel, and was buried at the Globe Cemetery in Motherwell.
