Probably came to Canada after his brother Barnard and parents. Charles and his family came aboard "The Europe". Although the date of their immigration is not known, their trip apparently was the last voyage for "The Europe".
Charles began his working life in Toronto as a labourer and carter. [2]As a carter, one of his most important functions was in transporting water, both to private houses (the townwell was in the St. Lawrence Market) and to fires.
In the 1840s, Charles became a bailiff of the United Counties of York and Peel. He retained this position until his death and, in fact, his job was a contributing factor in his death. Late in November of 1862, Charles was sent to Orillia to escort a prisoner back to Toronto. The trip by horse and sleigh took several days to travel in either direction. When he returned from the trip, he developed pneumonia and died two weeks later. He is buried in St.James Cemetery (Toronto) in the Roddy family plot (Lots 12 and 14,section R) but his name is not engraved on the present tombstone. [3]
