Biography
John Roskruge was baptized in Ruan Major,[1] Cornwall, on 22 March 1799. His parents were named John and Mary.[2][3]
John's parents were the John Roskruge (of Ruan Major) and Mary Murrish (of St Keverne)[4] who were married in St Keverne on 16 January 1798.[5]
On 26 June 1830 John Roskruge, a bachelor farmer of St Keverne, obtained a Licence for the Solemnization of Holy Matrimony in the parish church of Mullion[6] between him and Loveday Shepherd, a spinster of Mullion.[7] The marriage duly took place on 27 July 1830.[8]
John and Loveday had eleven children:
Mary Joanna Roskruge was baptized in St Keverne on 12 May 1831;[9]
Augusta Elizabeth Shepherd Roskruge was baptized in St Keverne on 21 May 1833;[10]
John Roskruge was baptized in St Keverne 7 October 1834;[11]
Thomas Shepherd Roskruge was baptized in St Keverne on 20 November 1836;[12]
Francis Roskruge was baptized in St Keverne on 14 February 1838;[13]
Loveday Nicholas Roskruge was baptized at the Carharrack[14] Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on 26 July 1840 (aged 3 months);[15][16]
Augustine Mark Sheppard Roskruge was baptized in St Keverne on 28 December 1841;[17]
James Roskruge was baptized on 29 August 1843 (St Keverne Wesleyan);[18]
Augusta Elizabeth Shephard Roskruge was born in the first quarter of 1845 (birth registered in the Helston district);[19]
Gerald William Roskruge was baptized in St Anthony in Meneage[20] on 25 June 1851;[21]
Ada Roskruge was baptized in St Keverne on 11 September 1853.[22]
The two Wesleyan baptism records do not give the father's occupation, but the others all say that he was a farmer. The first seven baptism records say that the family lived at Trenoweth in St Keverne (or Trenoweth Mill for Mary Joanna's baptism).
Trenoweth is about a kilometre east of Porthoustock, and a similar distance north-east of St Keverne church town.[23][24]
The 1841 census record for the family is as follows.
On census day 1841 the eldest child, Mary, was in the household of her Shepherd grandparents (Mark and Joan) in Mullion. The free image of this record available on FamilySearch is unfortunately illegible,[26] but FreeCen provide a transcription,[27] and pay sites have legible images.
Mark and Joan Shepherd's residence was at Tremenhee, on the northern edge of Mullion church town.[28]
The second daughter, Augusta, had died at age 7, and was buried in St Keverne on 28 October 1840.[29]
The birth of the daughter Lovedy Nicholas Roskruge was registered in the second quarter of 1840, and the General Register Office birth index confirms that her mother's maiden surname was Shephard.[30] She must have died before the 1841 census, but it seems that her death was not registered.
At the time of the 1851 census the family were living at Carne Vean in St Anthony in Meneage. (Note that the record of Gerald William's baptism[20] had the abode as Carne).[31][32]
