Leonard was the son of Alfred Ross and Elizabeth Marshall
Baptism; 15 Sep 1872 , St Peter Roman Catholic Church, Bloxwich, Walsall, Staffordshire, England, parents on this record Alfred Ross and Elizabeth Ross, previous name Starkey. Godparents on this record Josephus Ross and Emma Ross.
In 1881 at age 8 he is living with his parents and his step-brothers from his mother's first marriage Arthur Starkey age 22 and William Starkey age 16 at the family grocer's shop.
His father Alfred is described as a Stirrup maker employing 3 men.
In 1891 he is 18, living at Blakenall Heath (the same house as the previous census) Marriage to Sarah Ann Whitehouse Vale, May 1896

On the 1891 census, Ancestry has transcribed the last name as Russ.
There is 8 years between his daughters, which could suggest another child was born between them. The 1911 census lists 4 children born to the marriage and 4 children still living.
